Albertina
The Albertina opened only a few years ago and is both an architectural and cultural highlight with an incredibly extensive art collection. Dürer’s world-famous Hare, for instance, is hiding in its archives ….
The Albertina was built between 1742 and 1745, remodeled between 1801 and 1807, and comprises four different buildings: the baroque palace, the classicist extensions, the imperial palace, the Augustinian monastery, and the subterranean extensions in the bastion.
Art lover and collector Duke Albert Kasimir of Sachsen-Teschen, Empress Maria Theresia’s son-in-law, opened the collection to the public in 1822. The Albertina houses one of the world’s great graphic collections with approx. 50,000 drawings and one million prints from all art epochs and artists including Michelangelo and Warhol; the poster collection gives a great overview of Europe’s poster art.
