Benediktinerstift
Styria's oldest existing monastery is a place of tradition, progress and discourse. The monasteries main attractions are the baroque library and the new museum.
Admont Abbey was founded in 1074 by Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg. The Benedictine way of life has always been dominated by praying and the fulfillment of duties as pastors, as well as in educations, cultural and social areas.
Thanks to its important writing school, Admont Abbey had developed into a spiritual and cultural center. Besides the world’s largest library the monastery accommodates a museum full of medieval manuscripts and incunabula, early prints, art from the Middle Ages to now, a multi-media presentation and a collection of natural history objects.
